Zhuang Brocade

Zhuang brocade is a "living fossil" of Zhuang culture.
Its origins can be traced back to the Han Dynasty, it took initial shape in the Tang and Song dynasties, and reached its peak during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
It was originally a practical fabric woven by the Zhuang ancestors to adapt to the mountainous climate, using raw materials such as kudzu and hemp. The patterns mostly imitate nature, such as birds, beasts, flowers, and plants, and carry wishes for a bountiful harvest.
During the Song Dynasty, the craftsmanship of Zhuang brocade was significantly improved, and silk weaving techniques were incorporated. The colors became more vibrant, and it became a tribute to the imperial court.
In the Ming and Qing dynasties, Zhuang brocade became commercialized. It not only circulated within China but also was exported overseas via the Maritime Silk Road, becoming a carrier of cultural exchange between China and foreign countries.
Today, Zhuang brocade has been listed as a national intangible cultural heritage. It innovates while being inherited, retaining traditional patterns while integrating modern design, thus radiating new vitality.
Note: This is a DIY craft kit—you’ll need to assemble it yourself!
